New
Delhi, June 1st, 2016: The incidence of cancer continues to grow at an alarming rate in our
country. It is in fact not uncommon to know at least one person in the family or
friends who has been diagnosed with the disease. While advances in cancer
treatment and changes in health care systems over the past decade have led to
shorter hospital stays and higher survival rates of patients; the emotional and
social trauma that the disease puts the patient through is life-altering.
Aimed at raising mass
awareness and connecting the public to specialists in the country, the Indian
Medical Association in association with the Heart Care Foundation of India has
started the concept of its public webcasts every Thursday from 3:30-4pm. This
week’s webcast will be on radiation oncology and the faculty will include Dr.
Tejinder Kataria, Chairperson Radiation Oncology at Medanta – The Medicity and
Padma Shri Awardee Dr. KK Aggarwal – President HCFI & Honorary Secretary
General IMA. Any person from around the globe can log on to these webcasts by
visiting the IMA, HCFI or IJCP Group’s websites. They can also post their
questions online or send a text message to 9811090206, 9810118256 and have them
answered live.
Speaking
about the same, Padma Shri Awardee Dr KK
Aggarwal – Honorary Secretary General IMA & President HCFI said, "Most forms of cancer are
preventable and curable provided it is detected early. There is an urgent need
to raise awareness about the various causes of cancer and ways to halt its
growing incidence. Tobacco consumption or
exposure to second hand smoke is responsible for over 70% of all cancers in our
country. Stricter laws regarding smoking in public places and as well as discouraging
youngsters from getting addicated to cigarettes must be put in place. Through
this public webcast with Dr. Tejinder Kataria we will be looking at answering
all public queries around radiation oncology as well as sharing preventive
tips.”
In the past, the webcast
faculty has included experts such as Dr Sanjiv Chopra – Professor Harvard
Medical College, Dr Praveer Agarwal, Director
Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Padma Shri Awardee Dr Yash Gulati, Joint Replacement and Spine Surgeon - Apollo Hospital and Dr Harit Chaturvedi - Chairman, Max Institute of Oncology.
