Indian Medical Association announces the winners of the IMA National Women Achievers Award Dr. Jayshree Pranshankar Mehta – President MCI, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan – Director General ICMR recognized for their contribution to the medical fraternity New Delhi, March 08, 2016: The Indian Medical Association today announced the names of the two women who will be honoured with the IMA Women Achievers Award for the year 2016. Dr. Jayshree Pranshankar Mehta, President of the Medical Council of India and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan – Director-General of the Indian Council for Medical Research will receive the award which carries a citation, trophy and shawl for their outstanding contribution towards the advancement of the medical profession during IMA’s annual Central Council Meeting in December. Congratulating the awardees, Dr. SS Agarwal, National President & Padma Shri Awardee Dr. K K Aggarwal, Honorary Secretary General IMA said, “Dr Jayshree Pranshankar Mehta, President of the Medical Council of India and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan –Director-General of the Indian Council for Medical Research have helped bring in efficiency and transparency in the medical system through their leadership and we are proud to honour them as IMA’s Women Achievers for the year 2016. She did her MBBS from Gujarat University and M.S. (Surgery) from M.S. University of Baroda. In the past, she has held eminent positions including President of Association of Surgeons Baroda, President of All Gujarat Surgeon Association, Secretary Gujarat Medical Teacher’s Association, Member of Dr. B.C Roy Award Committee and Member of the Drug Formulatory Committee of the Govt of Gujarat. She has also served as the Vice Chancellor of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth University, Dean S.B.K.S. Medical Institute & Research Centre and Professor of Surgery at the Medical College Vadodara. She is the recipient of IMA’s consultant of the year 2008-2009. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan is an Indian Pediatrician and Clinical Scientist known for her works in Tuberculosis. She is currently positioned as Secretary, Department of Health Research - Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research. She holds M.B.B.S. from Armed Forces Medical College (India) and M. D. from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, along with a Diploma of National Board from National Board of Examinations. She is the daughter of "Indian Father of Green Revolution" M. S. Swaminathan and Mina Swaminathan.
