IMA leaders attend International Workshop on Cancer Awareness, Prevention, Screening and Early Detection for SAARC Nations New Delhi, March 05, 2016: With more than 1,300 persons succumbing to cancer every day, it has become one of the major causes of death occurring in the country due to communicable and life-style ailments, followed by tuberculosis. As per data of the National Cancer Registry Programme of the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the estimated mortality rate due to cancer saw an increase of six per cent approximately between 2012 and 2014. Large number of ageing population, unhealthy lifestyles, use of tobacco and tobacco products, unhealthy diets, lack of diagnostic facilities, etc. are some of the factors that can be attributed to the increase in the number of cancer deaths Keeping these in mind, Padma Shri Awardee Dr K K Aggarwal, Hony. Secretary General, IMA recently attended the International Workshop on "Cancer Awareness, prevention, Screening and Early detection for SAARC Nations" organized by Delhi State Cancer Institute, Govt. of NCT of Delhi. At the event, he shared IMA’s view of reducing the cancer burden in the country. According to him: Govt. of India should not give a national award to people who consume tobacco in public in any form or get associated directly or indirectly in the promotion of any tobacco related product. The cigarette pack should have 80% of educational material on both sides. On one side, it should talk about pictorial harmful effects of tobacco and similarly on the other side, it should talk about benefits of quitting, how to quit smoking and anti smoking health lines. The pictorial message must also include that smoking is linked with erectile dysfunction in men and early wrinkles in women. Tobacco is a carrier of Nicotin, which is a drug. Therefore tobacco product should be available at chemist shops only. Non smokers should form a group and fight for their rights. Tobacco harms and benefits of not smoking should be included in the school curriculum. Over 1 lakh anti tobacco counsellors should be trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna. It should be compulsory for every doctor to undergo educational courses so that he can help a quitter in quitting the consumption of all Tobacco related products Smoking in public places by doctors should be a violation of Code of Ethics of MCI
