She was diagnosed with severe blockages in her heart when she complained of chest discomfort and breathlessness. She was advised a bypass surgery. A mother of six children, Geeta Devi, did not have the money to pay for her surgery and gave up all hope. Vimla, a single mother of an 11-year-old girl called Rani from Shadra was determined that she will not let her child succumb to heart disease just because of her financial status. She fought with the society who believed that she was wasting her time and money trying to save the life of a girl child. After months of pleading, fighting and helplessness, Vimla brought baby Soni to the Heart Care Foundation of India office. After examination, Soni’s operation was scheduled at Medanta – the Medicity. She has now fully recovered and is regularly going to school and hopes to become a doctor someday.
